Channel slope in alluvial rivers is empirically related to the sediment load being transported, the characteristic (median) grain size of that sediment, and the discharge available to transport it: a river must maintain a steeper gradient to transport a larger sediment load or coarser sediment (both of which require more stream power per unit discharge), whereas a larger discharge provides more transport capacity, allowing the same load to be moved at a gentler slope.
