Vertical (depth) profiles of dissolved chemical constituents in the ocean are shaped by the biological pump: photosynthetic uptake depletes certain constituents in the sunlit surface layer, while remineralization of sinking organic matter at depth regenerates them, producing characteristic depth trends. Dissolved CO2 (as part of total dissolved inorganic carbon) and dissolved nutrients (nitrate, phosphate) both show low surface concentrations (consumed by photosynthesis) and increasing concentrations with depth (released by respiration/remineralization), giving them closely similar depth profiles, whereas dissolved oxygen shows the opposite (surface-high, subsurface-minimum) trend and pH follows an inverse relationship to CO2 rather than a directly similar profile shape.
