In a folded sequence with axial-planar cleavage, the angular relationship between bedding and cleavage on a given fold limb, as seen in cross-section, provides a way-up (younging) indicator: on a normal (right-way-up) limb, the acute angle between bedding and cleavage opens in the direction of younger strata (opens 'upward' in the stratigraphic sense), whereas on an overturned limb, this same angular relationship is reversed, with the acute angle opening in the opposite (older-strata) direction, allowing the two limb types to be distinguished using the bedding-cleavage intersection geometry shown in each cross-section.
