A rarefaction curve estimates the expected number of species that would be found if a smaller, standardized number of individuals were sampled from a larger assemblage, allowing fair comparison of species diversity between assemblages of different total sample sizes; to compare two unequally sized samples, one reads the larger sample's rarefaction curve at the sample size of the smaller sample and compares that rarefied value to the smaller sample's actual observed species count.
