The Bergeron (Bergeron-Findeisen) process explains rain/snow formation in cold, mixed-phase clouds containing both supercooled water droplets and ice crystals. Because the saturation vapor pressure over a liquid water surface is higher than over an ice surface at the same sub-freezing temperature, air that is saturated (or nearly so) with respect to water is supersaturated with respect to ice, driving net vapor deposition onto ice crystals at the expense of evaporating water droplets.
