In sequence stratigraphy, the accommodation-to-sediment-supply (A/S) ratio controls the stacking pattern of deposits. When sediment supply rate exceeds the rate of accommodation space creation, deposits initially fill and match the newly created space (aggradation) but eventually sediment supply exceeds available accommodation and the depositional shoreline is pushed basinward, building laterally outward (progradation).
