Sea surface temperature (SST) remote sensing relies on different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible and infrared sensors are blocked by cloud cover and cannot see through clouds, whereas microwave radiation can penetrate clouds (except during very heavy rain), making microwave sensors uniquely suited for measuring SST during persistently cloudy conditions like the monsoon.
