Debris flows are highly viscous, sediment-water slurries that behave as non-Newtonian fluids; their high viscosity (and associated matrix strength) allows them to support and transport very large boulders via buoyant/matrix support, unlike normal turbulent river flow which relies on hydrodynamic lift and turbulence to move particles.
