CSIR NET Earth Science Eligibility 2026

Before you start preparing for the CSIR NET Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences paper, make sure you meet the eligibility rules. This page summarises the educational qualification, minimum marks and age limits as set out in recent NTA notifications.

Important: NTA can change these rules in each exam cycle. Always confirm the details in the official information bulletin on csirnet.nta.ac.in before you apply.

Educational qualification

  • M.Sc. or equivalent degree (or integrated BS-MS) in Geology, Applied Geology, Geophysics, Oceanography, Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science or a related subject.
  • 4-year BS / integrated BS-MS, B.E., B.Tech., B.Pharma or MBBS degree holders can also apply.
  • Final-year students whose results are awaited can apply under the “Result Awaited” category, as long as they complete the qualifying degree with the required marks within the period NTA specifies.

Minimum marks

  • General / EWS / OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): at least 55% marks in the qualifying degree.
  • SC / ST / PwD / Third gender: at least 50% marks.

Percentages are calculated without rounding off, so 54.99% does not count as 55%.

JRF versus Lectureship / Assistant Professor eligibility

  • Candidates with a 4-year bachelor’s degree or those still in their bachelor’s programme are generally eligible for JRF only, not for Lectureship / Assistant Professor.
  • Master’s degree holders can be considered for JRF, Lectureship / Assistant Professor and PhD admission, depending on their age and score.

Age limit

  • JRF: there is an upper age limit. Recent notifications set it at 30 years, with relaxation for SC/ST, OBC (NCL), PwD, third gender and female candidates.
  • Lectureship / Assistant Professor and PhD admission: no upper age limit.

The exact cut-off date and relaxation years are given in each notification, so check them for the cycle you are applying in.

Exam frequency

CSIR NET is usually held twice a year, around June and December. Our CSIR NET Earth Science syllabus and exam pattern guide explains the paper structure and the units you need to cover.
