Oceanography for CSIR NET Earth Science: Important Topics, Numericals and PYQ Pattern

Oceanography is one of the most compact units in CSIR NET Earth Science, and many aspirants under-prepare it. Its questions are concept-driven and its numericals follow a small set of formulas, so a focused revision can earn you marks that others leave behind.

What the syllabus covers

  • Physical oceanography: temperature, salinity and density structure; thermocline, halocline and pycnocline; T–S diagrams; water masses.
  • Ocean circulation: wind-driven circulation, Ekman transport and pumping, geostrophic currents, western boundary intensification, upwelling, thermohaline circulation.
  • Waves and tides: deep- and shallow-water waves, wave speed and dispersion, tide-generating forces, spring and neap tides.
  • Chemical oceanography: major ions and constancy of composition, dissolved gases, the carbonate system, nutrients, CCD.
  • Marine geology: ocean floor features, marine sediments, the Indian Ocean and monsoon-driven circulation.

Numericals that repeat

  1. Wave speed: deep water c = gT/2π; shallow water c = √(gh). Know when each applies (depth greater than L/2, or less than L/20).
  2. Ekman transport: 90° to the right of the wind in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere, with magnitude τ/(ρf).
  3. Coriolis parameter: f = 2Ω sin φ, used in geostrophic and inertial-oscillation questions.
  4. Residence time: amount in the reservoir divided by the input or output rate.

Concepts examiners love

  • Why western boundary currents (the Gulf Stream, Kuroshio) are narrow, fast and deep.
  • Reading water masses off a T–S diagram.
  • Seasonal reversal of the Somali Current with the Indian monsoon.
  • The carbonate compensation depth and why calcareous ooze is absent below it.

How to revise in 10 days

  • Days 1–3: physical structure and T–S diagrams.
  • Days 4–6: circulation (Ekman, geostrophy, gyres, upwelling).
  • Days 7–8: waves and tides, solving at least 15 numericals.
  • Days 9–10: chemical oceanography and sediments, then a timed PYQ set.
