The total-field magnetic anomaly profile produced by a body approximated as a single isolated magnetic pole located at (or near) the magnetic equator, where the ambient field is essentially horizontal, is characterized by an antisymmetric (odd-symmetry) shape about the point directly overhead the pole: the anomaly is positive on one side and negative on the other, with a maximum and a minimum occurring at equal horizontal distances on opposite sides of the epicenter, and the horizontal distance from the epicenter to each extremum is related to the depth of the pole by a fixed geometric factor (approximately depth/sqrt(2) for this idealized single-pole, horizontal-field configuration).
