Relative sea level (the sea level position as recorded locally in the stratigraphic/sedimentary record) is controlled by the combination of eustatic (global) sea level change and local tectonic subsidence or uplift of the basin floor; relative sea level rises whenever the net effect of these two factors is an increase in accommodation space, which notably can occur even during a period of eustatic (global) sea level fall, provided that basin floor subsidence outpaces the eustatic fall.
