Most surface currents along the Indian coastlines (West India coastal current and East India coastal current) and the North Indian Ocean generally reverse direction seasonally in response to the reversing monsoon winds (southwest and northeast monsoons), whereas currents in the southern Indian Ocean such as the South Equatorial Current are driven by the more persistent, year-round southeast trade winds and do not reverse seasonally, flowing consistently westward throughout the year.
