Within a meandering river channel, flow velocity and hence sediment transport competence are highest along the channel thalweg (the line of maximum depth and typically maximum velocity, which follows the outer, cut-bank side of each meander bend), so the coarsest sediments are deposited and/or found along this deepest, highest-energy portion of the channel, while progressively finer sediments are deposited toward the point bar and overbank areas where flow velocity decreases.
