The Paleo-Tethys Sea was an ancient ocean basin that existed during the Paleozoic to early Mesozoic, separating the northern supercontinent Laurasia (comprising present-day North America, Europe, and much of Asia) from the southern supercontinent Gondwanaland (comprising South America, Africa, India, Australia, and Antarctica), before being progressively closed by the accretion of various terranes and the opening of the younger Neo-Tethys Sea to its south.
