The Ninety East Ridge in the eastern Indian Ocean is a hotspot track formed as the Indian Plate moved northward over the stationary Kerguelen hotspot from the Late Cretaceous through the Cenozoic. Because the plate moved north while the hotspot stayed fixed, the oceanic basalts forming the ridge get progressively younger from north to south being oldest in the north (formed earliest, closest to where the plate has since carried the crust) and youngest in the south (formed most recently, nearer the current hotspot position).
