Himalayan seismicity results from ongoing continent-continent collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. This collision, and the associated crustal shortening/thrust faulting producing Himalayan earthquakes, is ultimately driven by continued plate-driving forces including seafloor spreading and ridge-push at the Central/Southwest Indian Ridge system, which continues to propel the Indian plate northward into Asia.
